Art Start

Single Day Sessions

The Art Start program provides a foundation in academics incorporating music, movement, and art to develop and nurture a child’s innate artistic and creative exploration. This is a unique STEAM inspired program designed for Pre-K students by Art Start Director and Instructor, Abby Johnson. Drawing on her extensive background in youth education, pedagogy, Montessori, and the arts, this program aims to engage all aspects of learning allowing children to move, explore, build, and invent. These single day sessions offer students and families the flexibility to partake in one class or multiple classes in the series, giving them a taste of what an Art Start day looks like during our school year.

Animals, Art, and Artistry (2 offerings)

Calling all book lovers! Have you ever looked at illustrations done of your favorite children’s books and wondered how they created such pieces of art when creating their animals? In this camp we will do an author study in which we look at the unique style of the characters within the book. We will then mimic this style in our own creative masterpieces. Why stop there…we will then venture into the world of creative movement and bring our masterpieces to life through our own movements!

Commercial Dance Intensive (2 offerings)

This intensive will focus on 3 styles of Commercial Dance: Contemporary, Contemporary Partnering, and Jazz/Funk

Contemporary is a style of interpretive dance that embraces innovation: blending techniques from various genres, including classical ballet, jazz, modern dance, and lyrical dance. This class will push the dancer’s physicality, movement quality, and understanding of music. It shows each dancer how to keep the integrity of their technique while utilizing it in the most effective way possible.

Contemporary Partnering will explore different ways of combining modern, contemporary, and ballet vocabularies into a challenging but fun combination utilizing a contact-based approach to dancing with a partner. We will also explore ways to increase one’s artistic capacity through inspiration by movement, music, and philosophy. The students will be introduced to weight sharing, partnering, and improvisation methods.

Jazz/Funk originates from social dances that found their way onto the main stage. It is a mix of fast, intricate footwork, technique, and acrobatic floor moves. This genre of dance works on the dancer’s creativity, their understanding of music and energy, and fuses traditional jazz with hip-hop.
