Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy

Dance

SCAA offers a comprehensive study of dance in a variety of mediums with emphasis on the establishment of strong technical foundations as well as creativity. The dance program is designed in a progression of study for beginners through advanced levels which allows each student to develop strength, flexibility, musicality, coordination and artistry.

New this year: Classes are offered in two sessions. Students will need to register separately for each session. Study begins on a virtual platform using Zoom, with phases planned for potential reentry into the physical dance studios.

Session I is twelve weeks in length from September 14 – December 11. Study began this fall on a virtual platform using ZOOM. Students are receiving instruction at home from a device of their choice. In early November, we were pleased to phase-in a few dance classes using a hybrid model (Students were both in-person in the dance studio and virtual.)

Session II is sixteen weeks in length and begins January 25. Registration opens mid-November. For Session II, SCAA has expectations to continue phasing in “live in-person hybrid classes” as public health rules and mandates allow.

Note: with strict class-size limits, please register early to reserve your spot. Registration deadline is January 6 (for studio planning.) We offer ongoing registration past January 6 if space is available.

Placements into appropriate levels are by teacher recommendation. Placements for new students are determined by the instructors and the Dance Program Coordinator.

For all questions pertaining to classes, please email scaa@su.edu.

Performance information is not available at this time.

Ballet students continue classical training, advancing through levels of ballet and pointe with placement by teacher recommendation.

*We strongly encourage a minimum of two ballet classes a week for students who wish to do pointe-work in levels Ballet 5 and Advanced Ballet classes. Your options include: taking another ballet level (up or down) in addition to your core level class recommended by your teacher and/or enrolling in the Ballet Technique class.

Alternatively, students can choose to take all ballet classes without working on Pointe. It is not a requirement for continued study of ballet, even in SCAA’s upper ballet levels.
